Neurodiversity in STEM

"Neurodiversity may be every bit as crucial for the human race as biodiversity is for life in general."

— Harvey Blume, The Atlantic

Students in science lab

Strength Through Difference

"Different kinds of minds make different kinds of contributions — and the world needs every one of them."

— Temple Grandin, Scientist & Advocate

Innovation Without Limits

"We do not need to change the minds of neurodiverse thinkers — we need to change the world that underestimates them."

— Newton Awards STEM & Innovation Excellence

Every Mind Matters

"The most powerful innovations of our era came from people who were told they thought too differently — as if that were a flaw."

Building Tomorrow Together

"Inclusion is not lowering the bar — it is widening the door so that every brilliant mind can walk through it."

Inclusive Participation Model

Neurodiverse Innovators

Neurodivergent students often think in ways that produce extraordinary innovations. Our inclusive model is not about lowering standards — it is about removing structural barriers that prevent brilliant minds from demonstrating their full capabilities.
Every accommodation we offer is designed to reveal ability, not conceal it.

Newton Awards • Inclusive Mission

The Newton Awards Inclusive Mission

The Newton Awards STEM & Innovation Excellence competition believes that neurodiversity is a source of strength, not limitation. Our competition is built from the ground up to welcome and celebrate students across the full neurological spectrum.

Foundational Principles

How we operate

  • i.
    Universal Design First

The competition structure is built to be accessible by default — not adapted as an afterthought.

  • ii.
    Strength-Based Evaluation

Judges are trained to recognize and value diverse forms of brilliance, communication, and problem-solving.

  • iii.
    Confidential Disclosure

Students choose what to share. Disclosure is never required and never penalized.

  • iv.
    Dedicated Inclusion Staff

Our inclusion coordinators are available from application through final presentation to answer any questions.

Every kind
of brilliant mind

Our competition explicitly welcomes students across the full neurodiversity spectrum. The conditions below are not exhaustive — if you do not see your experience reflected here, please reach out. No mind that has something to contribute will be turned away.

01
Autism Spectrum Disorder

Including high-support and low-support needs. Pattern recognition, systems thinking, and intense focus are strengths we celebrate.

02
ADHD & ADD

Hyperactive, inattentive, and combined presentations. Hyperfocus and creative divergence are competitive advantages here.

03
Dyslexia & Dysgraphia

Alternative submission formats ensure written processing differences never obscure the quality of the underlying innovation.

04
Sensory Processing Differences

Presentation environments can be modified to reduce sensory load. Quiet rooms and scheduling flexibility are standard.

05
Dyscalculia

Computational tools and alternative quantitative formats are fully permitted and never penalized in evaluation.

06
Other Neurological Variations

Tourette syndrome, hyperlexia, processing speed differences, and any variation not listed here. Contact our team.

Available
Accommodations

All accommodations are provided at no cost. Requests are reviewed within five business days and confirmed in writing. All information shared with our inclusion team remains strictly confidential and is never disclosed to judges or evaluators.

Alternative Formats

Participants may request alternative formats for submission and presentation, including but not limited to:

  • Video-based project submissions
  • Oral presentations in lieu of written-only formats
  • Visual portfolios, prototypes, or demonstration-based submissions
Extended Time

Up to 2× additional time for written components, presentations, and Q&A sessions.

Private Presentation

Present one-on-one with a single judge in a quiet, private room — no audience, no pressure.

Support Person

A trusted adult or aide may accompany the student through all competition stages.

Written Q&A

Respond to judge questions in writing rather than verbally, with no time pressure.

Sensory Environment

Dimmed lighting, minimal noise, and designated quiet zones throughout the event.

One-on-One Judging

Individual judging sessions are available upon request. This request must be made at the time of application submission — requests made after submission will not be accommodated.

The most important innovations of our time may come from minds that were told they thought differently — as if that were a problem to solve.
